“Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” –Genesis 9:16
Promises are something that mankind isn’t so great at keeping. Couples at the alter promise to stay together until death do us part. The divorce rate hovers between 40% and 50%. The cable technician promises to be at your house to install Internet service between 8am and noon. He shows up at 3:30pm. Your child promises if you let him play one more level on his game, he’ll have his room cleaned before dinner. Still waiting on that one aren’t you?
Lucky for us, God is much better at keeping God’s promises. After flooding the Earth, God promised Noah to never again destroy all of the earth with a flood. Knowing that Noah would probably be a little skittish every time it rained, God put a rainbow in the sky as a reminder of His promise to Noah. What started as a reassurance for Noah has morphed into a reminder of God’s love and redemption for all.
At a recent well site in Sierra Leone, this promise was put on display. We were in a village that desperately needed water. The Set Free crew arrived in the village, and as always, proclaimed the well as a free gift showing God’s love. They worked tirelessly for days. The team prepped the site and began drilling. Near the end, they placed the pipe and pump in the newly drilled well. As soon as the crew started clearing out the sediment from water in the brand new well, a rainbow appeared. God’s love is present. And His promises are true whether we are reading this post from the comforts of America or around the world in a small village in Africa.
