What Are Set Free Christmas Trees?

Every holiday season, Set Free partners with local businesses to share the story of freedom, restoration, and hope. Each Set Free Christmas Tree is decorated with Wella elephants, colorful ornaments crafted in our vocational tailoring program in India.

Each ornament is:

  • Handmade by young women rescued from slavery
  • A symbol of courage, dignity, and new beginnings
  • A meaningful keepsake or gift for the holidays

Shoppers can purchase ornaments directly from the tree by scanning a QR code displayed at every tree. Pick your favorite ornament and make a $20 donation to Set Free using Venmo or a credit card. It’s a quick, simple way to make a global difference.

What Local Businesses Are Saying About Hosting a Set Free Christmas Tree

The Set Free Christmas Trees don’t just brighten lobbies, counters, and storefronts—they spark meaningful conversations, inspire generosity, and deepen the connection between Upstate businesses and their communities.

At Spill the Beans, Owner Abram Curtis says the partnership began simply because a friend asked if he could set up a tree. With a personal connection to missions through his parents, he quickly saw how naturally the display fit. With locations in the heart of downtown Greenville and Spartanburg, many customers hear about Set Free for the first time. He says customers love the elephants—so much so that they sell out quickly—and his own daughter has started a collection. “She also loves telling anyone who seems interested that they are made by little girls who have been rescued from slavery.”

At Tropical Grille, the heart behind the tree aligns beautifully with the heart behind their brand. “At Tropical Grille, we’ve always believed our purpose goes beyond serving great food — it’s about serving people,” shares Rachel Thomas, Director of Operations. Because faith and community are core to their mission, joining Set Free felt like a natural extension of who they are. “Through our fundraising campaign and the Set Free Christmas Trees, we’re helping provide meals for children who’ve been rescued, which feels like a natural extension of what we do every day.” Their guests have responded with enthusiasm and curiosity. “The trees aren’t just beautiful decorations — they tell a story. Seeing the ornaments has inspired guests to ask questions, learn more, and get involved.”

For Steve White Auto Group, displaying a Set Free Christmas Tree reflects the values they operate by every day. Torah Fields, Digital Sales & Marketing Director, says, “Our commitment to Professionalism, Integrity, Family, and Excellence guides every decision we make. Partnering with Set Free allows us to live out those values in a meaningful and tangible way.” Customers frequently pause to learn more about the ornaments and their story. She adds that many customers connect personally with the mission, leading to heartfelt reflections and genuine conversations. "For us, this initiative isn’t just a partnership," she says. "It’s a shared commitment to doing what’s right and striving for excellence in the lives of the people around us.

Why These Ornaments Matter

Every Wella elephant ornament purchased directly supports Set Free’s work around the world:

  • Rescuing children from slavery
  • Providing clean water through well drilling
  • Hosting medical clinics to serve families in need
  • Offering vocational training and restoration for rescued young women

When you take home a Wella elephant, you’re doing more than decorating your tree—you’re helping transform a life.

A Simple Way to Support Local Businesses and Global Impact

This initiative beautifully blends local love with global purpose. When you support these businesses, you’re also supporting the courageous young women who crafted the ornaments—and the communities Set Free serves.

Stop by a participating location, choose the ornament that speaks to you, and scan the QR code to complete your purchase in seconds.

It’s one small holiday choice that creates real, lasting change.
